Council Might Ok Bullfighting Request

Compiled From Wire Services

City fathers of Wendell are mulling a request to allow bullfighting in the south-central Idaho town.

Sponsors say it would be a scaled-down version, with bulls not being tortured and killed as they are outside the United States. Smaller bulls would be used, and they might be tied to a rope to prevent injury to the bullfighter.

John Teixeira and Manuel Dinis of the Magic Valley Portuguese Hall say they want to hold fights outside on the new hall’s property. The arena would be made with 1-ton hay bales but later might be built with metal pipes. Because there would be no lights, bullfighting events would be held only in the daytime.

The City Council has made no decision, but officials have asked for a drawing of the arena.

Dinis’ wife, Maria, offered to provide a videotape of a bullfight recently held outside the city.
