Ryan Moran of Mead and Ferris’ Darcy Ruemping are headed to the regional tennis tournament as the Greater Spokane League’s No. 1 singles seeds after posting wins in their District 8 championship matches Monday at Central Valley High School.
Moran bested Gonzaga Prep’s Luke Witt 6-3, 6-1, while Ruemping defeated teammate Megan McKitterick 6-2, 6-4.
Brett Kaiser and Tory Gambill of Mead topped Ferris’ Josh Dyck and Nick Mays 7-5, 6-3 to win the boys doubles championship.
The girls doubles championship went to Gonzaga Prep’s Kendra Leyda and Alecia Nelson with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Gretchen Smith and Genny Hartman of University.
Lewis and Clark’s Karl Johnson beat Gonzaga Prep’s Riggs Kubiak 6-3, 6-2 in a match for the boys third and fourth seeds to regionals.
Spencer Piston and Ben Maixner, of LC claimed the third seed in boys doubles with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over teammates Joe Harris and Danny Oranen.
G-Prep’s Lisa VanGemert topped CV’s Aaryn Volkman 6-1, 6-3 to gain the third seed in girls singles.
Alli Powers and Krista Kubiak of G-Prep edged Mead’s Marie Vagstad and Lindsey Wagstaff 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the girls doubles consolation match.
All the top four seeds advance to the regional tournament at an undetermined Big Nine site.
Baseball
Jason Miller’s safety squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Matt Heeter and gave the Northwest Christian Crusaders a 2-1 victory over the Republic Tigers in the championship game of the District 7-B tournament Monday at Seafirst Stadium.
NWC’s Jeremy Affeldt went the distance, giving up just two hits and one unearned run while striking out 15.
The Crusaders made it to the title game by doubling up Curlew 4-2 earlier in the day.
Curlew beat Davenport 12-11 in the consolation final. Jeremy Groth singled, stole second and scored the winning run on a wild throw to first on a Sean Tedrow grounder in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Top-seeded NWC will play host to Garfield-Palouse in the first round of the Region III-B tournament at Spokane Falls CC on Saturday. No. 3 seed Curlew will play Manson to open the tourney.
Second-seeded Republic will travel to Arlington on Saturday for a Region I-B match against a team to be determined.
Fourth-seeded Davenport travels to Walla Walla for a Region IV-B game against Mabton. All regional games are loser-out.

Terah Summers ripped a two-run triple and Julie Blackorby doubled in a run during a six-run sixth inning to spark Northwest Christian to victory Monday over Odessa at Davenport.
The win sends the Crusaders to the District 7-B tournament as a No. 4 seed. NWC will take on Springdale, the Panorama League’s top seed, at 9:30 a.m. at Kettle Falls in the first round of the tourney.

Golf
Ritzville’s Ryan Benzel shot a 1-over-par 73 to win the boys District 7-A/B tournament Monday at Hangman Valley Golf Course.
Benzel finished five shots ahead of teammate Josh Johnstone, Tekoa-Oakesdale’s Trevor Fox and Davenport’s Todd Strate.
Pullman’s Ryan Ressa shot a 72-75-147 to take medalist honors at the District 7-AA tournament in Clarkston. Cheney’s Ben McLuen was runner-up with a 75-76-151.
Also qualifying for the state tournament were Clarkston’s Doug McClure, East Valley’s Brian Miacola, Cheney’s Skyler Rudolph and West Valley’s Robert Murray.
GSL notes
The State AAA boys soccer quarterfinal game between North Central and Ferris on Saturday will be played at University High School at 1 p.m.
The winner earns a berth in the final four in Yakima the next weekend.
The AAA regional baseball tournament site hadn’t been selected by Monday afternoon. Tournament officials in the Tri-Cities were waiting for WIAA approval. They were looking into playing at Posse Stadium.
Mead and University represent the GSL. They play a seeding game this afternoon at Seafirst Stadium. The winner plays Big Nine runner-up Richland and the loser plays Kennewick, which used a suicide squeeze bunt to beat Richland 15-14 Saturday.
