Greek Orthodox Church Marks 50 Years
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington, is celebrating 50 years of serving the Spokane community in its unique domed building.
An anniversary celebration is scheduled for Sunday, June 1 at 12:30 p.m. The celebration, titled “Fifty Years at Home Under our Dome,” will include a program on the early history of the church and a banquet featuring roast leg of lamb.
The Holy Trinity parish itself has been in existence since 1932. Plans for the church were drawn up in 1947 and the first service was celebrated in the building in August of 1948.
“We’re going to be able to stretch this out awhile,” says the Rev. Stephen Supica, noting that since the building process took about a year, they’ll take a year to mark the anniversary.
As part of the celebration, the church is publishing more than 200 copies of a book written specifically for this event. The 60-page book, intended to celebrate the pioneers of the parish, includes old photos and personal recollections of people who were around back then.
“There are precious few of those people left,” says Supica.
The event will also include a few presentations on church history.
“You can’t have something like this go by without someone giving a speech,” Supica added.
Tickets to the event are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling Marina at (208) 687-5321. The history books can be purchased for $10. For more information, call the church office at 328-9310.
