Gte Wireless Begins Pcs Service

From Staff And Wire Reports

GTE Wireless has launched its personal communication system in Spokane, said area Manager Doug Robinson.

After a two-month shakedown period, he said, the network was officially activated Tuesday.

PCS is second-generation cellular telephone technology that provides a clearer signal and a variety of services like voice mail, caller ID and paging.

Sprint switched on its PCS service in Spokane earlier this year.

Spokane is GTE’s third PCS market. Cincinnati was first and Seattle followed last month.

Robinson said GTE customers in either Washington city can use their phones in both cities, or call between the cities, and be billed only for a local call.

The Spokane system has 22 antennas from Hayden Lake to Cheney. Others will be added later, Robinson said.

He said GTE has hired 22 employees, with the expectation 30 will be on the payroll by year-end. The Spokane office is located in Rock Pointe Center, with retail outlets at the Crescent Court downtown and in Northpointe Plaza.

A third store will be opened in the Valley Mall, Robinson said.
