Seles Wins Semifinal

Top-seeded Monica Seles struggled early before defeating Argentina’s Florencia Labat 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals of the Madrid Open in Spain.

In today’s final, Seles will face defending champion and No. 2 seed Jana Novotna, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

Steffi Graf defeated Amanda Coetzer for the first time in three tries this year, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in the semifinals of the Strasbourg Open in France.

In today’s final, Graf will play 15-year-old Mirjana Lucic of Croatia, a 7-5, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-5) winner over Judith Wiesner.

Southern California’s George Bastl defeated No. 2 Fredric Niemeyer of Middle Tennessee State 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I men’s tennis championship in Los Angeles, leaving no seeded players in the singles competition.

In an all-freshman final, Lilia Osterloh of Stanford defeated Florida’s M.C. White 6-1, 6-1 to win the NCAA women’s singles championship in Stanford, Calif.
