Cellular Phone Tower Proposed At Cannon, 6th

Cellular telephone towers are going up all over Spokane, but they can’t be erected unless they are approved by the city.

AT&T Wireless Services wants to build a 100-foot tower at the intersection of Cannon Street and Sixth Court. The location is close to where Interstate 90 and the railroad tracks cross each other at the west end of downtown.

The company needs a special permit from the city.

A hearing to decide on the permit has been set for Tuesday at 9 a.m. before the city hearing examiner in the second-floor conference room at City Hall.

The tower would have 12 directional panels and six whip-type antennas. A 230-square-foot building for electronic equipment would be put on the site.

Last month AT&T officials held a community meeting to talk about the proposal, but only one resident showed up, according to city files.

The resident said he doesn’t mind the tower as long as there aren’t others within a one-mile radius. City ordinance limits cellular towers to one every mile.

The resident also said he wants it painted so it doesn’t give off a glare from the sun. A company official said it will be painted if the city requires that.

The owner of the site is Westroad Investment Co. It would lease the tower site to AT&T for $3,600 a year, according to the city.
