Sampras Takes Paris

Compiled From Wire Services

Even bothered by a sore arm, Pete Sampras was too good for the field at the Paris Open and virtually clinched the No. 1 ranking for the fifth consecutive year.

Sampras gained his seventh title of the year and 51st of his career - most of any active player - by beating Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the final. Sampras also won the Paris Open in 1995.

Jana Novotna, the top seed and world’s No. 2 player, beat Ai Sugiyama of Japan 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Natasha Zvereva won the doubles final in the first set when Caroline Vis cursed the umpire, who then disqualified her and partner Yayuk Basuki.
