Imagine exploring the bustling Italian cities of Florence and Rome. Visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the museum of Michelangelo’s David. And seeing much more of that magnificent country.
And not having to pay for one cent of it.
You can.
Just enter The Spokesman-Review/Young Columbus contest. One Inland Northwest student will be selected to join students from other cities around the country on a trip to Italy March 31 through April 8, 1998.
To enter: Look through The Spokesman-Review, past or present, and find someone who has made an impact on society. You may also explore the newspaper online (www.spokane.net) for articles.
Collect the article or series of articles about this person and write a one-page summary of the person’s positive contributions.
Then write a 200-word fictional letter to this person explaining how he or she has inspired you to get involved in your community or given you a better understanding of the importance of community involvement.
Mail or deliver the article or series of articles, the summary and the fictitious letter along with a contest entry/parental consent form to Newspaper in Education Department/P.O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210-1615 by Dec. 15. Entry forms are available at your school, The Spokesman-Review offices, or by calling 459-5071 or (800) 338-8801, extension 5071.
Five finalists will be selected from the entries received. Judging will be based on depth of understanding, quality of content, originality and writing style. Finalists will be notified by Dec. 29 and will be judged in a personal interview to be held the first week of January. Finalists will be scored on community involvement, citizenship, scholastic ability, letter of recommendation from a teacher, personal goals and general personality. The winner will be asked to share his or her experience from the trip in an article for Our Generation.
The contest is open to students ages 12 to 18 in The Spokesman-Review’s home delivery circulation area. Spokesman-Review carriers are eligible. Relatives of newspaper employees and previous Young Columbus winners are ineligible.
