CV Answers Distress Call Bears Make Things Interesting; Mead Loses

After thoroughly dominating early, Central Valley’s football team was sinking fast in its playoff game against visiting Wenatchee.

Todd Millar answered a “mayday” plea during the Bears 21-14 victory.

Mayday is CV’s terminology for its two-minute offense. Millar was a big part of it during the 85-yard touchdown drive that won the game in the last 1:13 of the first half.

The victory was CV’s first in the playoffs and set up a game Saturday in Pasco against the Big Nine champions. Pasco beat Mead 42-29.

“We made history tonight,” coach Rick Giampietri told his players, “and got the monkey off our backs.”

The monkey, however, hung around most of night.

CV had led 13-0 and limited the Panthers to nine yards of offense in the game’s first 19 minutes.

But the team also squandered a couple scoring opportunities, and Wenatchee, following a fumble recovery, got two touchdowns just over a minute apart.

Millar then caught three sideline passes for 36 yards as CV came back.

“In mayday we just go out and try to look for me on an out pattern,” he said. “I had to get out of bounds. It’s just instinct, I guess, to know where you are on the field.”

Quarterback Chad Adamson, who also found fullback Garret Graham for 36 yards, scored on a rollout left with 24 seconds remaining until intermission and passed for a two-point conversion.

CV did not allow a first down after opening the game with a 56-yard drive for the game’s first score.

But the Bears came up short inside Wenatchee’s 40 on one series and missed a 26-yard field goal on another.

After scoring in the second quarter and getting a 37-yard run by Graham to the Panther 19, Adamson fumbled the center exchange.

It revitalized the visitors, who went to the air for the go-ahead scores. Following the first, Wenatchee recovered the pooch kickoff and struck again. The lead was short-lived.

Incessant defense by CV’s front allowed Wenatchee just 23 second-half yards and bailed the Bears out of numerous bungles.

Included was a Panther punt that hit a CV player and was recovered by Wenatchee. Colin White negated that with a 20-yard sack of Josh Cooprider, one of 55 yards in losses CV hung on the Panther quarterback.

“I think that’s 12 (sacks) after tonight,” said the senior defender. “They put me outside the tight end in our straight pass rush and it’s green grass to the quarterback.”

When CV’s snapper bounced the ball off upback Tyree Clowe giving Wenatchee another opportunity, Marc Hinckley had the final sack of Cooprider followed by Zac Scott’s interception.

Clowe was again CV’s offensive workhorse, rushing 30 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns. He had gains of 13 and 19 yards to help run out the clock.

“We should have had this by a lot,” said Giampietri. “We had 42 points in our pocket and let them off the hook. But the defense made big stops at times.”

The Panthers (7-3) shut down the Bulldogs’ running game but couldn’t stop the pass.

Scott Biglin completed 18 of 28 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns to offset a 300-yard rushing game for Mead.

After giving Mead an early 2-0 lead when they snapped the ball through the end zone on a punt attempt, the Braves scored twice in the second quarter. Biglin ran for five yards then threw for a TD and two-point conversion to make it 14-2 at the half.

Then the shootout started. Mead cut the margin to 14-9 and after the teams traded scores, the Braves got two quick ones, leading to make it 35-16.

Chris Griffins made it a close game with a 2-yard run and a 40-yard pass from Brandon Muzatko.

Biglin’s final TD pass iced the game.

Griffins led the Panthers with 92 yards on 11 carries and Muzatko passed for 112.
