Cross Country Notes

Valley resident Jill Larson, a junior runner for Gonzaga Prep, was awarded a WIAA sportsmanship medal following the 4A state cross country girls race in Pasco.

Officials choose an athlete for actions representing sport’s ideals apart from the competitive realm during all state contests.

Larson, who finished 72nd was singled out.

Miller just misses

During the race, University High’s Jaime Miller placed 13th, missing a race medal by one spot. The Titan girls faltered as a team, placing 16th.

U-Hi’s next-highest finisher, freshman Michelle Pierce was 96th. She is sister of Matt Pierce, who ran for the Titan boys state champions.

Marlow leads Knights

East Valley’s boys finished seventh as a team in the 3A, although Jim Marlow bounced back from his district race to place 16th overall. Teammate Ryan Coordes placed 28th.

West Valley junior David McNeill was 37th and teammate Sean McLachlan was 42nd.

Freeman brothers place

Freeman junior John Russell medaled during the A/B race, finishing 10th. His senior brother Joe finished 15th, just five seconds away from a medal.

Scotties freshman Laura Halverson ran 38th in the girls race.
