Dp’s New School Board Member Ready To Work

There wasn’t anything remotely spectacular about Joanne Greer’s victory over Phil Bray in the Deer Park School Board race.

Neither candidate dropped out of the race before the election and county elections officials reported the winner correctly.

The race didn’t go down to the wire forcing a recount; Greer received nearly 60 percent of the votes. It was just a no-nonsense win for Greer.

That’s only fitting; her election victory matches her personality.

Greer said she’s ready to go to work.

“I’d like the board to take a serious look at the curriculum,” Greer said in an interview on the Friday after her election win.

She said she has been working with a publisher and writer who have devised spelling tools for kids. She will encourage the board to take a look at their spelling curriculum.

“We also need to look at technology options for upgrading in the classrooms,” she said. “That’s something that’s got to be done.

“I’ve got some things available to me through some of my friends, so I’d like to see if they’re available and can be of use to the district,” Greer said.

Greer said now is a good time for her to be joining the school board. She said introducing new educational tools to students and teachers is a must now that Washington state educators have raised academic standards.

“This is a neat and a unique community,” Greer said. “Even without being on the board, people can work with this district and get things done, although I am happy to be on this board,” she said.

Last Friday, Greer had to cut an interview short to take her three children to piano lessons.

“It’s all part of the educational process,” Greer said.

As for Greer, she is optimistic she and the Deer Park board can make sweet harmony together.
