NEW FACES:

Travelers Property Casualty Corp. has named Kathleen B. Whitman general manager of operations for the national sales center that Travelers is opening in Spokane. Whitman most recently served as manager of a Nationwide Insurance call center in Portland. Earlier, she was director of marketing at AccessLine Technologies in Bellevue, Wash., and director of sales for Douglas Michaels Corp. in Springfield, Va.

Michael S. Bissell has joined the law offices of McCormick, Dunn & Black P.S. A 1994 graduate of the University of Washington School of Law, Bissell previously was associated with a Seattle law firm. He also has worked for the Colville Confederated Tribes and the Suquamish Tribe. His practice will focus on construction law and litigation.

Kim Chupurdia has joined Neuroeducation as a psychologist specializing in learning, behavioral and attention problems in all age groups. Chupurdia also has extensive experience working with eating disorders and behavioral medicine. She previously worked in private practice in Baltimore, Md., and at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

The following physicians have been accepted for membership in the Spokane County Medical Society:

Dr. Amaryllis Scott has joined Spokane Orthopedic & Fracture Clinic in the practice of orthopedic surgery. She graduated from New York Medical College, completed an internship at New York University Medical Center and a residency and fellowship at the Hospital for Joint Diseases. Scott also completed an additional fellowship at the University of Utah.

Dr. David Scott has joined Spokane Orthopedic & Fracture Clinic in the practice of orthopedic surgery. He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine, completed an internship at New York University Medical Center, a residency at the hospital for Joint Diseases and a fellowship at the University of Utah.

Dr. Lori Joy has joined Valley Obstetrics and Gynecology. She graduated from the University of Washington, completed an internship at the University of California, Davis Medical Center, and a residency at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Dr. Pamela Penner has joined Rockwood Clinic, Medical Lake, in the practice of family medicine. A graduate of Wayne State University, she completed a residency at Mid-Michigan Medical Center.

Dr. Kim Thorburn has joined the Spokane Regional Health District in the practice of public health. She graduated from the University of San Francisco, completed an internship and residency at Highland General Hospital and a fellowship at the University of Hawaii School of Public Health.

Dr. Elizabeth Hayes has joined Rockwood Clinic in the practice of family medicine. She graduated from the University of California, and completed an internship and residency at Merced Community Hospital.

Dr. Kelley Mathia has joined Spokane Obstetrics and Gynecology. A graduate of St. Louis University, she completed an internship and residency at St. Louis University Health Center.

Dr. Gerard Vallejo has joined Spokane Mental Health in the practice of general psychiatry. He graduated from the University of Texas-Houston and completed an internship and residency at the University of Washington. He completed an additional residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Dr. Daniel Schmidt has joined the Doctors Clinic of Spokane in the practice of family medicine. He graduated from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed an internship and residency at Deaconess Hospital.

Quality Inn Oakwood has hired Tammie Jones as sales manager. Jones, who previously worked for Courtyard by Marriott, will coordinate conferences and groups, sales and marketing.

The Spokane Area Economic Development Council has hired Sandy Guffin as membership manager. She will manage volunteers on several EDC committees, oversee the publishing of member communications and help attract new members to the organization. Guffin was formerly the director of marketing for PacifiCAD Inc.

MOVING UP:

Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. has promoted the following employees:

Kathryn L. Genteman was named human resources manager at the company’s Trentwood flat-rolled products facility. Genteman, who joined Kaiser’s Trentwood facility in 1977 as the first female front-line supervisor in the Cold Rolling Department, had been safety, health and environmental manager. She will continue to handle those responsibilities.

Robert W. “Bob” Warnock was promoted to controller, corporate operations, and will relocate to Pleasanton, Calif. Warnock, who joined Kaiser in 1969 as an accounting trainee, had been division controller, flat-rolled products, at Kaiser’s Trentwood facility. In his new role, he will have controller responsibilities for the aluminum operations, including oversight and interpretation of business unit results, and will oversee corporate accounting operations in Pleasanton.

Sterling Savings Association has promoted David F. Holinka to vice president. Holinka, who is Sterling’s business banking team leader for North Idaho, has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. Before joining Sterling, he was senior vice president and team leader of the Northern Idaho Business Banking Center for U.S. Bank.

Mary Cochran has been promoted to assistant pantry manager of the Garden Springs Pantry at Hampton Inn Spokane. She will oversee daily operations of the deli, as well as oversee catering for the conference rooms.

MOVING ON:

Seattle-based Windswept Capital LLC has hired Scott H. Martin as chief financial officer and project manager. Martin previously was a certified public accountant with LeMaster & Daniels PLLC in Spokane.

STARTING UP:

Jean Herzog has begun her practice as Herzog Counseling Services at Herzog Family Center, 2711 S. Grand Blvd. Herzog, who has worked at Samaritan Counseling Center since 1986, is a certified marriage and family therapist and certified mental health counselor. She works with adults, children, couples and families, and has a special interest in attention-deficit disorder.

Jim Strandy, Michael Kim and Joel Long have opened Summit Rehabilitation Associates at 511 S. Pines. Strandy has practiced in Spokane for more than 20 years and was the former owner of Spokane Associated Physical Therapists, which merged with Eagle Rehab in 1994. He specializes in hand and upper extremity evaluation and rehabilitation and is a certified hand therapist. Long spent the last three years working for Eagle Rehab in Everett, specializing in outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation. Kim, who has worked in Spokane for three years, specializes in hand therapy and orthopedic rehabilitation.

Jerry Christensen has expanded the services of his construction business by opening a local franchise of Rainbow International Carpet Care & Restoration Specialist. He will provide carpet cleaning and contracting services in Kootenai and Spokane counties.

TRANSACTIONS:

Eastern Washington University has been awarded a $76,000 grant by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to provide training in logging safety. EWU will use the grant to conduct seminars on OSHA’s logging standards, provide on-site training for loggers, assist logging firms in implementing safety and health programs and train loggers to conduct safety training at logging sites in Eastern Washington and North Idaho.

Dennis Larsen, a music teacher in Washington public schools for 13 years, has signed a two-year contract with ProMark Corp., a leading drum stick manufacturer. Larsen, who has been a professional musician for 26 years, will serve as a teacher endorser of ProMark products.

KUDOS:

Gonzaga University School of Business Administration has selected Jan Heberly of Helena to receive the 1997 Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award. Heberly was chosen based on nominations from faculty members, academic performance, leadership qualities and extracurricular involvement.

81 Times and its editor, Hugh Davis, have received the Washington School Public Relations Association 1997 Award for Excellence. The Spokane Public Schools District 81 employee newsletter, with a circulation of 4,400, was judged one of the best internal publications among nearly 200 entries in the association’s 1997 competition. Davis edited 81 Times and School Talk for a decade before transferring to a new position.

Members of the labor-management team at the Spokane Veterans Affairs Medical Center were honored by the National Partnership Council for their efforts in creating a team that has improved customer service and saved tax dollars.

New Horizons Computer Learning Center has awarded Spencer Hall a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers scholarship worth $10,000. Hall, a self-employed entrepreneur from Deer Park, is the first winner in the New Horizons MCSE scholarship program.
