Eastern Men Sign Three
Eastern Washington University men’s basketball coach Steve Aggers has announced the early signing of three players for the 1998-99 season.
They include Walla Walla Community College transfer Ryan Hansen, the 1996 Washington Class A player of the year from Leavenworth, Wash.; Chris Johnson, a 6-foot-11 senior post player at Thomas Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 6-8 power forward Dennis Fitzgerald, a transfer from Chabot JC in Hayward, Calif.
Hansen, a 6-2 guard, is Washington’s all-time prep scoring leader with 2,411 points. All-State his junior and senior years in high school, he was the state tournament MVP as a senior.
At WWCC last winter, Hansen earned first team All-NWAACC honors after averaging a league-leading 24.5 points per game.
Johnson, 17, was honorable mention all-area as a high school junior. He played in the Southern Colorado All-Star game and made the all-star team at the prestigious Jerry Mullen Big Man Camp.
Fitzgerald played his high school basketball at Castro Valley High School where he was a three-year starter in basketball and football.
Honors for Spink
Senior outside hitter Theresa Spink of Gonzaga University was named to the All-West Coast Conference second team in volleyball.
The Bellingham native recorded 415 kills, 278 digs, and 95 total blocks. Spink led the Bulldogs in kills per game (3.73) and attack percentage (.291) to rank seventh and fifth respectively in the WCC.
Spink registered career highs with 29 kills and 10 total blocks against the University of San Francisco, and was one of two Bulldogs to appear in all 111 games Gonzaga played.For her three-year career, Spink compiled 836 kills, 582 digs and 158 total blocks. Her 421 kills are good for seventh place on the single-season kills list.
Loyola Marymount’s Sarah Noriega was named player of the year. Sue Snyder of University of San Diego’s championship team received coach of the year honors, and Cathy Cook, University of Portland, was named freshman of the year.
