Reign Drop One To Lasers

Charlotte Smith had 10 of her season-high 26 points in the first quarter, and a 15-0 San Jose start led the Lasers to an 87-63 victory Saturday night over the visiting Seattle Reign.

A jumper by Sheri Sam with 7:44 left in the second quarter sparked a 12-5 run by the Lasers that put the game out of reach for the Reign.

San Jose earned its biggest lead of 28 points on a jumper by Sam in the fourth quarter.

Smith, whose previous high was 21 points, also surpassed by one her best rebounding total by pulling down 15. Nine of them were defensive boards.

Clarisse Machanguana added a career-high 22 points for San Jose, which also got 12 points and a season-high four steals from Sam.

Kate Starbird lead the Reign with 14 points, and Shalonda Enis added 13.

Katie Smith matched her career high with 26 points while leading Columbus to a victory over Colorado, extending the Quest’s winning streak to seven games.

Shannon Johnson added 19 points for Columbus, which also got 16 points and 10 rebounds from Valerie Still.

Colorado was led by Crystal Robinson’s 23 points. Tari Phillips added 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Colorado took a 20-7 lead and held a 22-13 advantage at the end of the first period.

The Quest rallied and took a 42-41 lead in the closing seconds of the first half on a 3-point play by Smith.
