Art Search Beginning For New Library

As the Indian Trail branch library moves toward completion, library directors are beginning their search for permanent art for the building.

About $13,000 is available for the design, fabrication and installation of the art.

“A real variety has been selected in the past,” said Dolly Richendrfer, library communications manager. “We have everything from etched copper and glass at the downtown library, to a magical, whimsical fabric and aluminum stabile sculpture suspended from the ceiling at South Hill branch,” she said.

The selection criteria includes artistic merit, relationship to the site, the project intent, the artist’s proven ability to carry out the project, and the cost of maintaining the proposed work.

Professional artists living in Washington, Oregon or Idaho are invited to participate in the competition.

The submission deadline is Dec. 15 at 5 p.m.

A proposal workshop will be held at the branch at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27.

The architect and city arts director will conduct a tour of the branch and answer any questions.

The art selection jury includes two arts commissioners, the architect, neighborhood representative, an artist-at-large, and the library director.

The jury will make its recommendation in January. The art is scheduled to be installed next August.

The Indian Trail branch library is scheduled to open in late March.

“We are on schedule and on budget,” said Richendrfer. “We are in the process of finalizing the furniture selection and interiors for the library.”
