Japanese Weakness Boosts Dollar
The dollar rose against the yen Thursday as traders continued to react to signs of weakness in the Japanese economy.
The dollar eased against the mark as the German currency benefited from a mild flight from Italian lire. Stubborn market convictions that Germany will have to raise interest rates soon were also supporting the mark.
New York trading was quiet, however, as many investors were absent for the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah. Others held back ahead of key employment data due out today.
