Adams, Herbert Spark Lc
Melanie Adams’ serves and Lindsay Herbert’s spikes lifted the Lake City High volleyball team to a come-from-behind 15-12, 15-7 win over Coeur d’Alene in an Inland Empire League match Tuesday at Viking Gym.
LC found itself trailing 12-5 in the first game. The Vikings built the lead when sophomore Katie Jo Shirley’s serving accounted for seven points after a 5-5 tie.
That’s when Adams stepped up, as the Timberwolves ran off eight points. Adams recorded two aces during the stretch.
“It takes something to shift the momentum in this game when you’re down,” said Timberwolves coach Kent Scanlon, whose team improved to 3-2 in league and 7-8 overall. “Sometimes it’s a series of plays, but in this case, it was Melanie and her serving. She came in and served well and that was the key that took the pressure off the rest of us so we could gather our heads. Her serving got us to a point where we could finally establish some dominance.”
The Viks held their own early in the second game as they battled LC back and forth for the sideout.
After being tied 5-5, Adams stepped up to serve again. This time she served only two winners, but it was the beginning of another run. CdA managed just two more points.
Adams said the sport is all about confidence and whether your head is in the game or not.
“We’ve been kind of slacking off this season, and I know we can play,” she said. “We can beat all the teams in our league and it’s the confidence we need to do it. And tonight, we got it. I believe now we’ll have enough confidence to play well the rest of our games.”
Herbert led LC with nine kills, three blocks and one ace. Kellie Stern added four kills. Setter Jennifer Derr left with 23 assists, one kill and the winning bump on match point.
The Vikings are currently 0-5 in league games and 3-10 overall.
“A lot of times, we play great and then all of a sudden, we’re not there,” said CdA coach Karla Mitchell. “Our team is very well aware that they can play at a higher level, but they haven’t been and that’s frustrating. Our faith isn’t real strong and it’s not in their hearts. It’s going to take a couple of really big wins to build that faith.”
Jamie Hammes had 17 service points, including a 10-0 run in the first game, as St. Maries (15-2, 7-0) defeated visiting Priest River 15-7, 15-3 and clinched at least a tie for its 17th consecutive Intermountain League title with three matches left.
Bridgette O’Dwyer added 10 kills and two blocks for the Lumberjacks, The Spartans are 7-6, 3-5.
Amber Paulson’s 11 kills and four blocks helped Bonners Ferry (10-10, 4-4) to a 15-11, 12-15, 15-12 IML win over visiting Lakeland (9-8, 2-4).
Sarah Walter added 15 assists and Kendra Maas nine kills for the Badgers.

Sandpoint built a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on breakaways by Rebekah Reissnider and Amanda Cravens. The Timberwolves scored before intermission when Hayley Shortridge secured a rebound and fed Katie Brunn.
The outcome helped put a new leader atop the NIL because Coeur d’Alene (11-4-0, 9-1-0) notched a 6-0 win over visiting Bonners Ferry (0-9-0).
Mallory Jaynes, typically a junior varsity player, scored twice for the Vikings. Megan Michalak, in her second varsity action, scored by running the ball down the left side from the midfield and hitting the far post.
Third-place Moscow (10-3-0, 8-3-0), CdA’s opponent on Thursday, defeated visiting Lewiston 4-2 as Holly Davidson’s goal and assist led a rally.
Bryn Devlin’s breakaway gave the Bengals (4-5-2, 3-5-2) an early lead, but Davidson responded with a direct kick from 20 yards. Davidson later crossed a pass to Tara Tribbet for a header goal.
