Post Street Bridge, Monroe Reopen
For six weeks, drivers trying to cut through Spokane on Monroe Street faced detours. Now, they’re greeted by fresh pavement.
Crews giving a face lift to four blocks of Monroe north of the Spokane River finished the $750,000 project Tuesday night.
Monroe is reopened, as is the Post Street bridge, which had been closed to prevent cars using the bridge from interfering with those detouring around the road work.
The project was tough on the small businesses along Monroe. Several shopkeepers reported that sales plummeted 50 percent or more.
The project was complicated by the many sewer pipes, electrical lines and other utilities under the asphalt. Crews also found a wide variety of materials in the road bed, including rotted wooden railroad ties and an old trolly line.
