Mead Drops G-Prep
GSL
Call them the Cardiac Kids. For the second time this season the Mead Panthers went into overtime to knock off a Greater Spokane League opponent.
Friday night before 4,110 fans at Joe Albi Stadium, the Panthers (3-1, 4-1) eked out a 24-23 victory over previously unbeaten Gonzaga Prep (3-1, 4-1). And in this case history repeated itself.
“It was the same play we used to beat Ferris in overtime,” said Panthers coach Bob McCray. “That was a good defensive football team we played tonight. Our defense is starting to really come along, too. I couldn’t be prouder of our defensive coaches for the way they got our kids ready to play.”
In the opener, Lewis and Clark (4-1, 4-1) rushed for 359 yards and cruised to a 23-7 victory over Rogers (2-3, 2-3).
“The success of our offense definitely starts with our running game,” said LC coach John Hook. “We’ve put a lot of emphasis lately on running the football.”
Mead 24, G-Prep 23 (OT)
Defense was the name of the game in the first half. Mead held the Bullpups to 83 yards, all on the ground.
The Panthers piled up 207 yards of offense, but had only a 25-yard second-quarter field goal by Keith Stamps to show for it.
Dusty Bettesworth pulled the Bullpups even at halftime with a 34-yard field goal with 1 second remaining.
Mead jumped ahead with 5:27 left in the third quarter when Kris Griffins took a pitch from quarterback Brandon Muzatko and raced 59 yards for a touchdown and a 10-3 lead.
Gonzaga Prep drove deep into Mead territory three times in the second half, but only the third time was charmed. The Bullpups put together a seven-play, 52-yard drive with quarterback Kevin O’Connell bulling his way into the end zone on a 1-yard keeper to tie the score at 10 with 3:08 on the clock.
Mead drove to the Bullpup 30-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. G-Prep put itself in position to win when O’Connell ripped off a 49-yard run to the Mead 23.
The next three plays netted one yard and Bettesworth’s 39-yard field goal was blocked, sending the game into overtime.
Mead took a 17-10 lead on a Chris McCullough 3-yard run and a Keith Stamps extra-point kick.
G-Prep rallied with 9-yard TD run by O’Connell and a Bettesworth kick to send the game to the second overtime. The Bullpups took a 23-17 lead on an O’Connell 2-yard run, but Bettesworth pulled the extra-point kick wide left.
Mead took advantage of the costly miscue. Muzatko hit a wide-open Chris Callahan over the middle on a third-and-eight play to tie the score and Stamps’ kick gave the Panthers the victory.

Lewis and Clark 23, Rogers 7
Lewis and Clark dominated the first half, thanks to a 10-carry, 135-yard effort from Pete Flatt.
Flatt, Nick Spurgetis, Erik Coleman and quarterback Daryl Lockridge amassed 217 yards on the ground en route to a 20-0 halftime lead.
“It’s great when you see a wide-open field,” stated Flatt. “Spurgetis and our offensive line threw some great blocks out there.”
Coleman’s 15-yard run capped a 12-play, 67-yard, first-quarter drive, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead. LC stretched the lead to 13-0 with 9:27 left in the second quarter on a 52-yard romp by Flatt.
Sean Dahlstrom’s extra-point kick hit the right upright.
“Rogers is a real physical team,” noted Flatt. “But we knew what we had to do and we went out and did it. We’re really coming along as a football team.”
The Pirates let a golden opportunity slip through their hands on their next possession. Rogers drove from its own 30-yard line to a first-and-goal at the LC 10.
But a first-down pass by Pirates quarterback Brett Oglesbee was picked off by Luke Bowman at the 2-yard line.
The Tigers then pounded out an 11-play, 98-yard drive culminating in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Lockridge to Silas Wyatt for a 20-0 advantage. Rogers got on the board 5 seconds into the fourth quarter when Oglesbee ended a 10-play, 59-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Jason Gregerson’s kick cut the deficit to 20-7.
Flatt, who finished with 171 yards on 14 carries, added a 35-yard field goal with 4:26 left to play to round out the scoring. Mike Dorton rushed for 135 yards on 22 carries for the Pirates.
