Teenage Football Player Dies In Wreck

A Castleford High School student and football player was killed when the pickup truck he was driving left a gravel road and rolled several times, ejecting him.

Byron S. Cordova, 16, died at the scene of the crash at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Deputy J.P. O’Donnell said.

Scott D. Malberg, 15, one of two passengers in the truck, was taken to Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls with a badly broken left arm.

Another passenger, Benji I. Graybeal, 12, was riding in the back of the extended-cab pickup, but he was not seriously injured.

Cordova was a lineman for the high school football team. Malberg also is a lineman and Graybeal is a team manager They were on their way to pick up teammates.

Football coach Lani Schofield said he found out about the wreck just as the team began preparing for Friday night’s scheduled game with Carey High School.

The game was canceled, and Schofield said it probably would not be rescheduled.
