Cda Legion Names Turrell As New Coach

Tracy Turrell has been named head coach of the Coeur d’Alene AA American Legion baseball team.

Turrell was among two finalists to replace Cory Bridges, who served as head coach last summer on an interim basis. North Idaho College assistant Tony Bevacqua also interviewed for the job.

Turrell, a CdA High grad, coached the final half of the 1996 season for the CdA Legion team when then-coach Paul Mather took a leave of absence. Mather eventually resigned, but Turrell withdrew from consideration to accept the Sandpoint head coaching job.

Turrell resigned well before last season started because Sandpoint boosters opposed the hiring.

College volleyball

Makare Desilets, who led Washington to its upset win over No. 8-ranked Washington State, is the Pacific-10 Conference volleyball player of the week.

Desilets, a senior quick hitter, had 22 kills, nine digs, six blocks, one service ace and hit .378 as the 24th-ranked Huskies overcame WSU in four games, ending the Cougars’ 22-game home winning streak.

College women’s soccer

Caryn Noel and Lora Auch each had a goal and an assist - in fact, they set up each other - to lead Eastern Washington (3-3-2) to a 3-0 win over visiting Wenatchee Community College on Sunday.

Amy Schmidt needed to make just two saves for the shutout as EWU outshot the Knights 39-5. Madonna Konshuck also scored for the Eagles.

College golf

With a solid show of consistency, Eastern Washington’s men are tied for first place heading into today’s final round of the 54-hole Big Sky Conference golf championships in Blackfoot, Idaho.

Led by Scott Carroll, tied for third in the individual competition at 6-over-par 150, four of the Eagles’ five golfers are within five shots of one another.

EWU and Weber State have 36-hole totals of 609, five shots up on Idaho State, which has the leading individual in Shane Langstaff at 1-over 145.

Eastern Washington’s women were lagging in eighth place, 112 shots back of pace-setting Northern Arizona, heading into today’s final round of the Big Sky Conference championships in Blackfoot, Idaho.

NAU has 626 after 36 holes. EWU is at 696 with its leader, Jamie Long, tied for 20th at 14-over-par 170. Kylie Smith is at 173. Spokane’s Hilary Prugh of Montana State is at 175.

Baseball

The Spokane Spawn are the only unbeaten team in the national 30-and-over baseball tournament in Phoenix after defeating the Sammie Hanes All-Stars of Los Angeles 14-2 Monday.
