Rower Hospitalized

Compiled From Wire Services

One member of the only all-women team in an international rowboat race across the Atlantic was hospitalized, just 24 hours into the three-month competition.

Doctors suspect American Pearl team member Victoria “Tori” Murden, 34, of Louisville, Ky., has food poisoning or a virus. She fell ill just hours into the race, and a spokeswoman for the team said by the time a Spanish fishing boat answered the women’s S.O.S. radio signal before dawn Monday, Murden was barely conscious, dehydrated and running a high fever. Doctors have ruled out sea sickness as a cause.

The American Pearl and 23 other row boats left Tenerife Island in the Canary Islands Sunday morning for the 2,700-mile journey to Barbados.
