Ev, U-Hi Facing Tough Games
East Valley has its back against the wall and University has its work cut out in featured Friday night football games.
The Knights, following a disheartening 28-27 loss to Clarkston, entertain unbeaten Cheney in the Frontier feature.
In Greater Spokane League action, U-Hi hosts rival Central Valley, unbeaten and second ranked in state.
Following the game WIAA executive director Mike Colbrese will present a sportsmanship medal to each team. U-Hi does so each home game.
“If spectators could pause and observe it would be greatly appreciated,” said U-Hi activities coordinator Bill Ames.
Although the underdog, an upset victory by the Titans isn’t unprecedented. They beat the league championship Bears of 1983 and a decade later, in coach Mike Ganey’s first season, upset the Bears 6-0.
There’s added incentive for a team that improved its GSL record to 3-2 last week. The Titans can make the playoffs with wins in two of their final three games, including against Mead.
East Valley must win out, beginning with the Blackhawks, and hope for a three-way championship tie if a playoff spot is to be realized.
Last week the Knights ran up nearly 400 yards of total offense, but were thwarted by five turnovers and a missed extra point.
Seasons of plenty
High schools are nearing the post-season in four of five fall sports.
GSL boys and girls cross country finished Wednesday with U-Hi seeking to lock up a pair of championships and CV’s quietly successful girls hoping for a winning season and share of fourth place.
Frontier cross country will be completed this afternoon, when EV expects to win a pair of league titles and West Valley figures to finish second twice.
Volleyball ends tonight for both the Bears and Titans, who play each other at U-Hi.
CV can share sixth play with a win and, as they did a year ago, make the district playoffs.
The Bears have won six games, two more than last year before Mt. Spokane joined the league. U-Hi, winless last season, improved to four victories so far this year.
CV’s girls soccer team is at Shadle Park Friday at 3:30 p.m. for a match in which a victory would assure the injury-riddled Bears a GSL playoff berth.
Although losing 3-1 to Mead in the championship match last Friday, U-Hi is assured a playoff spot and became the first team to score on the Panthers this year.
A win Wednesday would have secured second place for the Titans. They finish Friday against North Central.
CV sophomore Corrine Gannon is tied for sixth with teammate Raeanna Jewell overall in scoring, but her six goals in league play is the GSL’s best.
Titans Megan Black and Leah Brereton have five goals apiece overall.
