Council Changes Prefab Housing Rule
The Spokane City Council Monday threw out restrictions that limited the number of manufactured homes allowed in one block.
Last year, the council opened up all neighborhoods except historic districts to the prefab housing. But representatives from the manufactured housing industry complained about restrictions limiting the number of homes in one block.
Changes approved by the council allow more than two prefab homes to be placed on the same side of the street in a single block. The proposal also gets rid of the condition that two manufactured houses can’t be built side by side.
The council considered loosening the restrictions in August, but delayed the decision after complaints from neighborhood residents.
The planning commission met last week with representatives from the community assembly, which is comprised of neighborhood council members.
At the urging of assembly members, the commission recommended the council tighten design standards for the type of housing that would be allowed, including that a manufactured home can’t be more than five years old when it’s put on a lot.
The council also adopted the tighter design standards.
