Rogers High’s Walk Of Fame Inducts Six Alumni
Six successful alumni from Rogers High School who have been active in community affairs were inducted into the school’s Walk of Fame last Friday.
David Downey, Betty Hammond, Glen Jacobson, Deanna Oliver, Fay O. Richardson and Lawrence Stanley were introduced by Spokane Mayor Jack Geraghty.
Hammond died in April, and her induction was accepted by her son, Floyd Hammond.
The Walk of Fame is part of Rogers High School’s Renaissance Program which recognizes academic excellence. The program also recognizes students with 3.5 grade-point averages.
Spokane Mayor Jack Geraghty introduced this year’s honorees at the Friday morning Homecoming Convocation. They join a long list of other graduates who have had distinguished careers and contributed to society.
No more busing
A handful of Garry Middle School students who used to take the bus to school, even though they weren’t eligible, are now off the route.
The students live within the one-mile busing radius of the school. By state standards, students eligible for busing must live outside the one-mile radius, said Joe Madsen, Spokane School District 81’s transportation director.
Students living in the following areas are not eligible to ride the bus.
Colton, north of Weile.
0002 to 1999 block of East Wedgewood.
Weile Avenue east of Colton.
Busing service ended last week.
“We’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause each of you,” Madsen wrote in a letter to parents of students living in those areas. “However, we must stay within the guidelines given to us from the state.”
Larsen pounds away
Mead Middle School choir director Dennis Larsen doesn’t want to work. He just wants to bang on the drum all day.
Earlier this month, Larsen traveled to Tampa, Fla., to compete in the “Best Unsigned Drummer in the Country” contest. He also performed in concert with Arthur Duncan, formerly of the Lawrence Welk television show.
Larsen was one of 15 national finalists chosen from more than 1,000 entries. He was the only drummer west of the Mississippi chosen as a national finalist.
