Dollar Broadly Lower

The dollar was battered by a drop in U.S. stocks Thursday, adding to a week-long slump against the Swiss franc and German mark while turning lower vs. the Japanese yen.

Weakness in South American markets added urgency to dollar-selling as the United States has much heavier investments than Switzerland and Germany in those countries, said Jay Wertheimer, a senior foreign-exchange trader at Banco di Sicilia in New York.
