University and Ferris fought past stubborn rivals and foul weather to register District 8-4A girls soccer wins Thursday.
U-Hi broke a scoreless tie at 55 minutes and added a late goal to edge visiting Gonzaga Prep 2-1.
Ferris scored at 75 and 79 minutes to trip visiting Lewis and Clark 3-1.
When the rainy, windy afternoon ended, the five-team district field was cut to three.
A final team will be eliminated Monday, after Ferris visits U-Hi at 3 p.m. The winner plays at Mead (16-0) Wednesday for seeding to the State 4A playoffs.
U-Hi edged Ferris 1-0 during the Greater Spokane League season.
At U-Hi on Thursday, Megan Black scored from 12 yards on a breakaway to end the shutout. The Titans (12-3) added a goal at 75 minutes when a defender slipped and Casey Lektorich shot from nearly the same spot as Black.
Bullpups goalkeeper Shaynie Leonard switched positions and fed Laura Oliva for a late goal.
G-Prep (11-7) had defeated U-Hi 3-2 in a non-league match and lost to the Titans 2-1 during the league season.
At Ferris, the Saxons’ Karie Pruett, returning from an injury, secured a loose ball at midfield and left-footed a shot from 25 yards to break a 1-all tie. Minutes later, Megan Cummings passed to Mariah McConnaughey for a oneon-one play from 18 yards.
Christine Rehwald scored first for the Saxons (12-5), one-touching a shot after a steal at midfield. LC (8-7) tied the match at 63:00 when Megan Mackenzie was awarded a direct free kick because Ferris goalkeeper Jessica Froelich slid outside the 18-yard box while making a save.
Ferris also defeated LC 3-1 during the regular season.
KDee Anderson’s goal late in the first half gave Cheney a 1-0 win over visiting West Valley in a District 7-3A loser-out match.
Cheney had twice defeated WV 2-0 during the Frontier League season.
Anderson, on a feed from Jesse Sockler, outraced two defenders and deflected in a shot off the post at 36 minutes.
Cheney (9-3-2) had a secondhalf goal disallowed for obstructing the Eagles’ goalkeeper on a corner kick.
The Eagles finished 8-8.
Cheney plays at league-champion East Valley (11-2-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday. EV advances to state if it wins. If Cheney wins, the teams play another match, at 3 p.m. Tuesday, for a state berth.
