Ex-Osu Wrestler Takes World Freestyle Crown

Oregon State assistant wrestling coach Les Gutches won the gold medal Sunday at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships.

The former Oregon State wrestling star downed the Ukraine’s Eldar Asanov to take the gold in the 187-1/4-pound class with a 1-1 overtime referee’s decision.

The win adds a world championship to Gutches’ two U.S. national championships and the two NCAA titles he won while competing for the Beavers. Last year, he won his first U.S. title but finished seventh at 1996 Olympic Games.

But Gutches still sees room for improvement.

“I’m not happy that I only scored one point,” he said. “He was a tough opponent, I’ll give him that.”
