Hoch’s Eagle Wins Milwaukee
Golf
Scott Hoch chipped in from 70 feet for an eagle on the par-5 18th hole Sunday in Brown Deer, Wis., to leap-frog over Loren Roberts and win his second Greater Milwaukee Open in three years.
Minutes after Hoch’s remarkable shot, David Sutherland lipped an eagle putt from nearly the same spot that would have forced a playoff.
Sutherland, who began the day with a share of the lead for the first time in his career before blowing a three-shot lead on the back nine, fell to his knees and buried his head in his hands. He tied for second with Roberts at 15-under-par 269.
With Roberts in the clubhouse at 15-under, Hoch entered the final hole one shot back and needed a birdie to force a playoff. Instead, he made the shot for a 5-under 66 and won the $234,000 first-place prize.
Senior PGA
Hugh Baiocchi, playing in his second playoff in two weeks and third of the year, tapped in for par on the sixth extra hole then watched Bob Duval miss a par-saving putt for his first win on the Senior PGA Tour. The victory at the Pittsburgh Senior Classic in Midway, Pa., was Baiocchi’s first win since 1989 and was worth $165,000.
LPGA
Cindy Figg-Currier had nine birdies in shooting the best round of her career, a 9-under-par 63, and held a one-stroke lead over Kim Williams after two rounds of the Rail Classic in Springfield, Ill.
Kathryn Marshall matched LPGA records with a 62 that featured 11 birdies. Marshall, Jane Crafter and Sherri Steinhauer were second at 10-under 134.
