Chip Boosts Speed Of Mobile Computers
In a development that could soup up palmtop computers and mobile phones, Digital Equipment Corp. unveiled a microchip Tuesday that combines desktop speed with low energy use.
Several analysts praised the new microprocessor, saying it has the potential to become a popular chip for a variety of hand-held computers. Whether the nifty machines are poised for major growth, however, is uncertain.
Called the StrongARM SA-1100, the chip will have several advantages over competitors when it begins shipping early next year.
The coin-sized microprocessor controls memory, video displays and other functions that previously took up more space.
