Maradona Won’t Be Tried
A judge in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has dismissed charges of drug use brought against former soccer star Diego Maradona by the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
Maradona tested positive for undisclosed “illegal substances” after a league game Aug. 24.
Maradona demanded a second test, which also was positive and the AFA filed charges against the player, accusing him of illegal drug use.
Judge Carlos Liporace ruled that Maradona should not be tried for drug use because the law “calls for penalties for the person who supplied the illegal substances, but not for the player who used them.”
Two players for Major League Soccer’s D.C. United have pleaded innocent to rape and kidnapping charges in an alleged assault against a woman in a downtown Columbus, Ohio, hotel.
Attorneys for defender Mario Gori, 24, of Argentina, and forward Raul Diaz Arce, 27, of El Salvador, entered the pleas. No trial date was set.
