Wise Checks Rockies As Boise Takes 1-0 Lead
Right-hander Matt Wise allowed two hits and struck out nine in seven innings as North Division champion Boise beat visiting Portland 7-5 to open the Northwest League championship series.
Paxton Stewart had a two-run triple and Cesar Geronimo an RBI double during Boise’s five-run fifth inning. Stewart scored on a throwing error.
The teams combined for 10 errors, six by the Rockies.
Portland scored twice in the ninth off Boise stopper Bo Donaldson. The Rockies had a runner at third base when Todd Sears flied out to end the game.
Jake Kringen pitched into the seventh and took the loss. He allowed six runs on six hits, walking two while striking out seven.
The best-of-five series continues tonight at Boise.
The Hawks, who captured the North by six games over the Spokane Indians, have won four of the last six NWL titles.

Sullivan Scoreboard of Spokane won twice at the Over-45 National Slowpitch Tournament in Enid, Okla.
Greg Hart went 3 for 4, with a home run and five RBIs, and Kim Martin was 4 for 4 in a 23-5 win over Parr Farms of Oklahoma.
The team topped LAFF of Los Angeles 10-5, as John Neudorfer was 3 for 4, with a three-run shot and five RBIs, and Chip Alphen went 3 for 3.

Senior Scott Bushnell gained 233 yards on 19 carries Friday as visiting Lake City defeated Coeur d’Alene 40-13 in Inland Empire League football, the Timberwolves’ first win over their crosstown rival.
The Vikings held a 4-0 series edge.
Bushnell ran for a 45-yard touchdown on LC’s first play from scrimmage. He added a 7-yard TD run, then Timberwolves quarterback Chad Troxel scored on a 2-yard sneak for a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
Pat Goodwin rushed for 64 yards for CdA, which was outgained 436-164.
Senior Scott Chamberlain rushed for 166 yards on 20 carries, including a 3-yard TD in the third quarter that allowed Post Falls to tie Lakeland 12-12 in a non-leaguer at Post Falls Junior High.
Every extra-point attempt failed.
Chamberlain rushed for 53 of his 102 first-half yards during a secondquarter possession that resulted in QB Ben Sharon’s 4-yard bootleg TD and a 6-0 lead.
The Hawks seized the edge on Harrison Bertsch’s 1-yard run minutes later, and Dan Ross’ 29-yard run early in the second half. Lakeland QB Kurt Reese completed his first 10 passes and was 11 of 15 for 152 yards.
