Former Singapore Leader Hospitalized
Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was hospitalized with a respiratory infection Saturday, the government said.
Lee, 73, was in stable condition and being treated for “acute respiratory tract infection involving the sinuses,” said a statement from the office of Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.
Lee was prime minister from 1959 to 1990, when he stepped down to be replaced by Goh, his hand-picked successor.
The two regularly consult to set government policy, and visiting statesmen make a point of seeing Lee as well as Goh.
