Attorney Drops Challenge Of Post Street Closure
Attorney Steve Eugster on Monday dropped a lawsuit against the city of Spokane that challenged the council’s decision to close Post Street to make way for a private downtown shopping development.
Eugster filed the suit in July, about a week after the council approved plans to sell Post between Spokane Falls Boulevard and Main Avenue to the developers of River Park Square.
Eugster alleged the closure prevented the use of Post as an arterial street.
The city recently closed the Post Street bridge to ease traffic flows around the reconstruction of Monroe Street.
“It has become abundantly clear from watching the closure of the Post Street bridge that Post Street is not needed for north-south traffic,” Eugster said. “Obviously, that means the Lincoln Street bridge is not needed for north-south traffic,” he added, referring to the city’s plan for a new bridge.
Phil Williams, the city’s director of planning and engineering services, said Monday he was pleased to learn Eugster dropped the lawsuit. But he differed with the attorney’s conclusions about the Post Street and Lincoln Street bridges.
If the detours are working smoothly, it’s because “people realize it’s a very temporary arrangement,” Williams said.
