Zags End Long Skid Against UI Spink Leads Gonzaga Sweep Of Vandals In Volleyball

Gonzaga snapped its 11-match volleyball losing streak against University of Idaho with a 15-6, 15-8, 15-13 victory Tuesday night in Memorial Gym.

“None of those kids has ever beaten Idaho,” Bulldogs coach Eva Windlin-Jansen said. “This is great.”

Gonzaga, after three consecutive losses, improved to 4-4. Idaho, which had successive come-from-behind victories against Portland and Wyoming, falls to 3-5.

Bulldogs senior middle blocker Theresa Spink had a match-high 15 kills and a team-high .500 attack percentage. Junior setter Nicole Lamoure recorded 42 assists, and stands 275 shy of moving into third place on Gonzaga’s all-time list.

Gonzaga held Idaho middle blocker Jessica Moore to a season-low six kills and a .111 attack percentage.

Idaho led 13-5 in the third game before Gonzaga mounted its comeback on the play of Spink and junior outside hitter Diane Pascua, who had 11 kills, a match-high 15 digs and a .240 attack percentage.

The Vandals were led by junior middle blocker Shalyne Lynch, who joined the team late after competing on a traveling club team in her native Canada. She slammed a team-high 11 kills. Alli Nieman also played well with six kills, a .556 attack percentage and 2-1/2 blocks.

Gonzaga, which hadn’t defeated Idaho since the 1991 season, saw a different Vandals team from past years, especially with the graduation of record-breaking setter Lynne Hyland.

Idaho setter Anna Reznicek, who had a season-high 71 assists in its win over Wyoming, had 32 against Gonzaga.

Gonzaga travels to Eugene, Ore., to play in the University of Oregon Volleyball Classic Friday and Saturday. Idaho faces No. 6 Washington State on Tuesday in Pullman at 7 p.m.
