Kfc League Will Use Round-Robin Format
In its own way, Freeman volleyball is breaking new ground.
“You mean the ‘Kentucky Fried Chicken’ league?” queried coach Ken Davis of the three-team Northeast A.
Kettle Falls, Freeman and Colfax (KFC) make up the league. They’ll play their season on three Saturdays with round-robin matches at each school.
“I’m looking forward to the different format,” said Davis.
Thereafter the three will play off for a berth in the State A tournament.
“We’re thinking about checking in with District 5 and joining a regional,” said Davis. “Then two teams would play against six from there.”
The Scotties are young. There are only two seniors on the team. And with no height, Davis said offensively they’ll have to run their offense quicker.
“It’s a different style of team,” he said. “They’re quick.”
Veterans include seniors Jordan Moberg, at 5-foot-11 the only player taller than 5-7, and Helda Dahmen. Juniors Sarah Pratt, Karie Amend and Nicki Roecks all played for last year’s third-place league finisher.
New to the varsity are juniors Marissa Dahmen, Heidi Zuber, Tiffany Comstock, Julie Tuttle and sophomores Leslie White and Heather Wilkerson.
Finding opponents hasn’t been easy because of the way leagues have been revamped due to classification changes.
“We’ve had problems scheduling teams,” said Davis. “I’d like to thank the 3A (Frontier League) teams for scheduling us because they’re in the same boat we are.”
