Burton Hopes To Start

Compiled From Wire Services

Jeff Burton hopes to at least start today’s CMT 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H., despite an inner ear problem that has affected his equilibrium.

Todd Bodine, subbing for Burton, stood on his first-day lap in Saturday’s second-round time trials and failed to qualify. But the car was added to the field as a provisional entry.

If Burton, who is fourth in season points, does start in the car today, he would have to start from the 43rd spot.

NBA forward Tom Hammonds and former player Larry Nance successfully qualified in the Pro Stock division of the NHRA Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals in Mohnton, Pa.

Qualifying for the first time, Hammonds had a quarter-mile run of 7.009 seconds at 197.10 mph in an Oldsmobile Cutlass. Nance finished in 7.010 seconds at 196.46 mph in a Cutlass.

Jim Yates topped the Pro Stock qualifiers with a track-record run of 6.946 seconds at 197.67 mph in a Pontiac Firebird.
