Saxons Dominate At Kentwood
Without dropping a game, Ferris’ volleyball team won Saturday’s Kentwood Tournament, topped by a 15-9, 15-4 decision over Riverside-Auburn in the title match.
Missy Blackshire had 12 kills, Janelle Morrisette 21 assists and Julie Weatherred eight digs for the Saxons in the title contest.
Ferris went 3-0 against KentMeridian and Auburn in pool play, stopped Kentlake 15-4, 15-12 in a quarterfinal, and defeated Bothell 15-8, 15-7 in a semifinal.
The Saxons also won two straight from Mt. Spokane and North Central in Greater Spokane League-counting matches to continue to lead the league at 4-0. Devon Herron had eight assists and Amy George five aces against Mt. Spokane (0-4), and Weatherred had five kills against NC (1-3).
Rogers (3-1) swept NC and Mt. Spokane in GSL matches. Teneisha Tilque had seven blocks against NC, while Angel Fairbanks’ seven kills helped the win over Mt. Spokane.
Carlin Oeljen and Erin Naipo made the all-tournament team as Lewis and Clark placed second at the Northwest Invitational at Walla Walla.
Selah defeated LC 15-8 in the championship match. The tourney was running late, so coaches agreed to play one game starting in the quarterfinals.
In semifinals, LC topped Gonzaga Prep 15-11 and Selah stopped Mead 15-7. Mead defeated G-Prep 15-6 in the match for third and fourth.
Shadle Park’s Michelle Etter also made the all-tourney team.
In best-of-3 matches that count in the GSL standings, Mead (3-0) defeated Shadle Park and Central Valley (0-3); LC (2-1) defeated G-Prep and CV; and G-Prep and Shadle (both 2-1) defeated University (0-3).
Rose Sacco had 18 assists and four aces in Prep’s win over U-Hi; Etter’s 12 kills helped Shadle over U-Hi; Abby Hornstein and Kortney Stewart had five kills apiece in Mead’s win over Shadle; Naipo had six digs and six kills in LC’s win over CV; Oeljen had 10 digs and three blocks in LC’s win over G-Prep; and Staci Schuerman had nine digs in Mead’s win over CV.
Carey Sauer’s 15 kills and 14 digs guided Newport to a 15-10, 6-15, 15-10, 15-11 win at Pullman in the Great Northern League debut for both.
Jonica Tramposch had 32 assists for Pullman.
Cross country
Senior Seth Mott of boys State 4A second-ranked University defended as a champion of the 19th annual Valley Invitational at Liberty Lake County Park.
Mott, who won the junior division last year, completed the 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 21 seconds - 3 seconds ahead of teammate Dan Chavez.
The host Titans dominated the seven-team meet, winning all four boys divisions and two in the girls.
U-Hi’s Jaime Miller won the senior girls in 19:59, the day’s top time by 16 seconds over teammate Michelle Cesal, the junior girls winner.
Mark Davis (16:31), juniors; Trevor Newton (17:17), sophomores; and Brandon Stum (17:48), freshmen, also won for U-Hi’s boys. Central Valley sophomore Jill Mittman (21:35) and West Valley freshman Kelsie Lounder (21:43) were the other girls winners.
Jim Rucker ran a course-record 10:09 for 2 miles to lead sixth-ranked Gonzaga Prep’s boys to second place at the Edmonds Invitational.
Prep won five of seven flights to finish behind third-ranked Eisenhower.
East Valley, top ranked among 3A girls after three consecutive State AA titles, tied Newport (Bellevue) for the team title at the Shoreline Invitational.
Shadle Park edged 10th-ranked G-Prep for seventh place.
Tom Becker of Mt. Spokane won the Flathead Invitational at Kalispell, finishing the 3-mile course in 15:22.
Becker, the early leader, was caught in the middle stages but broke ahead with less than 1 mile left.
Sixth-place Ben Clarke (16:01) led North Central to third place in the team race, with 94 points. Fourth-ranked Mt. Spokane scored 132 for fourth place. The host Braves won with 56 points.
Mt. Spokane’s Nichelle Pomeroy was the top local girls finisher, in 20th.
Football
Jason Carroll rushed for 68 yards and passed for 84 to help Sprague-Harrington to a 30-0 B-11 non-league win at Curlew in a season-opener for both.
Matt Wagner of the Falcons rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns, and returned a fumble 20 yards for another score. Matt Henry had four receptions for 66 yards and freshman Aaron Timm had two interceptions for S-H.
Hockey
Chris Austin had four assists as visiting Grand Forks defeated the Spokane Braves 5-2 in a KIJHL game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
