Tincan Receives $166,000 In Grants

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Spokane-based community computer network has received about $166,000 in grants to put Inland Northwest history on-line, officials said Monday.

In addition, the Inland Northwest Community Access Network, or TINCAN, will use the money to create an interactive environment for instruction and community discussion and to help patrons of local organizations get on-line.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting gave $71,348 over two years; the National Endowment for Humanities, $60,000 over 18 months. The Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board gave $34,250 to hire students to connect community organizations to the internet and teach users how to access TINCAN.

Project director Karen Michaelson said TINCAN in January will begin posting historical material from the Spokane Public Library and other sources.

The Center for Technology, Education and the Community, and Eastern Washington University operate TINCAN from the downtown Paulsen Building. The network provides free access to community events, museum displays, government offices and other sources at http://www.tincan.org.
