Commission Looks At Ways To Protect Wild Fish Populations

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will conduct a public hearing on its proposed wild salmonid policy Sept. 27 at Yakima.

Commissioners, who are discussing the issue with Western Washington treaty tribes today in Olympia, will consider adopting the policy Oct. 3 in Ellensburg.

The policy has been developed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife at the direction of the Legislature. It aims to protect and restore fragile wild fish populations by changing harvest and hatchery operations and allowing local habitat decisions by watershed-based citizen councils.

The Yakima hearing, preceded by a similar hearing in Seattle on Sept. 25, has been scheduled for Cavanaugh’s at Yakima Center at 9 a.m.
