Judge Needs 30 Minutes To Read 43 Counts Against Serial Rapist

Associated Press

A man who pleaded guilty or no contest to 43 counts including rape, sex abuse, robbery and sodomy was sentenced to up to 40 years in prison Monday.

Mikal Shabazz, 25, could have received 120 years in prison. His sentence of 25 to 40 years provides no chance for parole.

Six of the victims were present in court. “He does not deserve my forgiveness and will never get it,” said one victim, raped at gunpoint in February.

He began his attacks in January of 1996 in northeast Portland and moved around the city.

He threatened to kill one woman’s children if she screamed.

It took Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Frank L. Bearden 30 minutes to read off the charges against Shabazz.

He pleaded guilty to five counts each of first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy and first-degree sex abuse, one count each of attempted first-degree rape and attempted first-degree sodomy, nine counts of first-degree burglary, six counts of second-degree robbery and one count of second-degree assault.

He pleaded no contest to 10 other counts including five more of first-degree rape. Shabazz has been in jail since his arrest in April.
