Devon Herron Ferris Year: Senior Sport: Sophomore Position: Setter
With No. 1 setter Janelle Morrisette nursing a sore hand, and backup setter Katie Lee too sick to play, Ferris had two options before last Saturday’s Kentwood Invitational semifinal: Turn to 5-foot-9 sophomore setter Devon Herron or 5-9 sophomore setter Joelene Bogle.
“You’re in, Devon,” said Ferris coach Stacey Ward.
“I just kind of pretended like it was practice,” said Herron, who had 23 assists and hit the target on 9 of 10 serves in the Saxons’ 15-8, 15-7 victory over Bothell.
Ferris, which hasn’t dropped a game this year, followed up with a 15-9, 15-4 championship win over Auburn-Riverside. Morrisette was back at the helm, her hand diagnosed as merely bruised.
The injury occurred during warmups, when middle blocker Missy Blackshire blasted a rocket off Morrisette’s hand. Called on for duty, Herron took the news in stride.
“Actually, to me, she didn’t appear to react,” Ward said. “You would have thought she’d been the starting varsity setter forever.”
Herron and longtime teammate Bogle rotate between varsity and junior varsity. Ward chose to carry both, expanding her varsity roster to 14.
