Unbeaten Prep Outshoots U-Hi

Gonzaga Prep answered every challenge Wednesday during a 3-2 shootout win at University in a non-league girls soccer matchup of Greater Spokane League teams.

Prep (4-0) scored two minutes before the end of regulation for a 1-all tie, forced a shootout with a goal in the second overtime, then won the shootout 4-3.

The Titans (2-1) carried a 1-0 lead late into regulation, courtesy of an own goal. During OT, U-Hi’s Casey Lektorich scored 4 minutes in, but Shaynie Leonard answered in the second OT.

In other non-league matches involving GSL teams, Shadle Park edged Mt. Spokane 3-2; Lewis and Clark topped Central Valley 3-1; Mead defeated Rogers 7-1; and Ferris stopped North Central 11-0.

At Shadle, the visiting Wildcats (0-3) kicked the ball into their goal with 2 minutes left to hand the win to the Highlanders (3-2). Kristen Hawley assisted on a pair of goals in the first 22 minutes, but Mt. Spokane rallied as Laurel Jones scored 6 minutes apart.

At Hart Field, Jessica Dinneen’s free kick with 8 minutes left sealed LC’s win over the visiting Bears (2-2). The Tigers are also 2-2.

At Mead Junior High, Natalie Kehl scored 2 minutes apart midway through the second half, giving her seven goals for the year, as the Panthers (4-0) stopped the Pirates’ two-game winning streak. Rogers is 2-2.

At Ferris, Mariah McConnaughey returned from a quadriceps injury to notch two goals and two assists as the Saxons (3-3) defeated the visiting Indians (0-4). Megan Cummings scored three times, and Rachel Lassman had two goals and an assist in the final 15 minutes. Three NC starters missed the match because of injuries.

GSL teams will meet again for non-leaguers on Wednesday. The league season, highlighted by Ferris at G-Prep, begins Sept. 29.

College men’s soccer

Keith Husby scored three goals to lead Whitworth (3-1, 1-1) to a 3-1 victory over visiting Whitman (1-4, 0-2) in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges.

Herbert Barbosa scored five times, twice in the final 5 minutes, as Community Colleges of Spokane (2-0) topped South Puget Sound 8-0 at Spokane Falls CC.

College women’s soccer

Whitworth (1-3-1, 1-1) limited visiting Whitman (0-4, 0-2) to two shots during a 2-0 NCIC home win.

College volleyball

JoEne Heimbigner’s 37 assists led CCS to a 15-2, 15-6, 8-15, 15-9 win at Yakima Valley Community College.

Sabrina Page added 10 digs, and Kate Antolick and Shannon Nelson 10 kills apiece for the Sasquatch, 4-6 overall and 2-0 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College’s Eastern Division.
