Espn Radio Buys Rights To Air Major League Baseball

Associated Press

ESPN, which already televises three major league baseball games a week, acquired the exclusive national radio rights to major league baseball games.

ESPN and the major leagues announced the five-year deal Thursday. It takes effect at the conclusion of this season.

ESPN Radio will broadcast all postseason games, the All-Star game, the Sunday night game of the week, Opening Day games, holiday weekend games and selected pennant race games in September.

“Baseball on the radio is a uniquely American experience and we look forward to conveying vivid images to baseball fans across the country,” ESPN president Steve Bornstein said.

ESPN Radio will also offer nightly “Baseball Tonight” segments, broadcast of the winter meetings, major award announcements, live cut-ins and the 1997 expansion draft, ESPN Radio’s first broadcast.

CBS Radio had been broadcasting major league baseball games since 1976. ESPN Radio has 375 affiliates nationwide.
