Shadle Knocks Off Cv

Shadle Park has returned to its familiar neighborhood in Greater Spokane League volleyball.

The Highlanders are 4-1 after Thursday’s 15-5, 15-5, 15-4 win at Central Valley (1-4).

Shadle was 9-23 (.281) in GSL matches the past two years. The previous 17 years, the Highlanders were 240-35 (.873), with 11 league and five State AAA titles.

Michelle Etter led Shadle with 16 kills, six aces, four digs and six blocks. Jodey Curelli added 15 assists and six aces. For the Bears, Martha Roberts had 12 assists and Rikki Jackson six digs.

Also in the GSL, Lewis and Clark outlasted University 15-4, 7-15, 15-4, 11-15, 15-11, and Gonzaga Prep defeated Mt. Spokane 15-7, 15-5, 15-6.

At U-Hi, the third meeting between coach Buzzie Welch of LC (4-1) and coach Mike Welch of the Titans (0-5) again went Dad’s way, but not by much.

Amy Kaupilla had 16 digs and Erin Naipo 22 kills for the Tigers, who led the fifth game 5-0 before U-Hi tied it at 11. LC led the fourth game 11-6, but the serving of Angela McAuley and Allison Fryer rallied the Titans. Jennifer Madsen had 22 kills, McAuley 22 digs and Crissa Poole 43 assists for U-Hi.

At Prep, freshman Laura Bruya had seven kills and Rose Sacco added 22 assists as the Bullpups (3-2) topped the Wildcats (0-6).

Sarah Miller had eight digs and Brandi Graham five blocks for Mt. Spokane, which is 0-16 in GSL games since starting the season 2-0.

Carey Sauer totaled 11 kills, 12 blocks and three aces as visiting Newport (3-0) defeated Chewelah 15-12, 15-5, 15-11 to break a first-place tie with idle Colville in the Great Northern League.

Halee Haptonstall added 12 assists and Lisa Almond was 18 of 18 on serves for the Grizzlies. Shannon Edwards led the Cougars (1-2) with 26 assists and four digs.

Also in the GNL, Jenilee Williams’ 15 kills and six digs helped Deer Park (1-2) defeat visiting Medical Lake 15-3, 11-15, 15-10, 15-12.

Gina Bendowsky also had 15 kills for the Stags. Amanda Monroe of the Cardinals (1-2) totaled seven kills and seven digs.

At Nine Mile Falls, Nikki Petticrew’s 11 kills and 13 digs guided Lakeside (2-1) to a 15-5, 15-8, 13-15, 15-12 win over visiting Riverside (0-3).

Sarah Lebahn had 12 digs and eight kills for the Rams, who won the third game after trailing 10-5.

At Tekoa, the Tekoa-Oakesdale Nighthawks outlasted defending State B champion Davenport 4-15, 15-6, 9-15, 16-14, 15-10 in a non-leaguer. The Gorillas, who open their Bi-County League season Saturday at Reardan, lost one senior off their title team.

Cross country

Seventeen ranked teams are expected at Shadle for Saturday’s Highlander Invitational, reputed to be the state’s oldest invitational.

Shadle girls coach Bob Isitt said 30 schools plan to attend the meet, including many GSL and Big Nine Conference powers.

Chewelah won last year’s senior boys division, while U-Hi captured the varsity girls. Eligible returning divisional winners include Stephanie Heaton of the second-ranked Eisenhower girls, Jim Rucker of the fourth-ranked G-Prep boys, Devon VanDyne of the sixth-ranked U-Hi girls and Erin Krogel of the host Highlander girls.

Girls soccer

Kelly Pritchard scored three times, giving her five goals in two matches, as Pullman (2-0) defeated visiting Lakeside 6-0 in the GNL.

Lakeside’s bus driver had difficulty locating the field, so the Eagles played without warming up.
