Millwood Church Adjusts For Youth Involvement

Nina Culver Correspondent

Millwood Community Presbyterian Church is expanding its services and adding a new contemporary worship service in response to requests from church members and the community.

“We’re trying to shape the ministry of the church to meet the needs of the community,” says associate pastor Dave Steane.

Part of that is getting the children and youth more involved in all aspects of the church.

“We want to make the children and youth a regular part of the fabric of what we do,” says Steane.

To that end, the church has hired two people to work with children’s programs. Church member Karen Baldwin has been hired as the children’s worship coordinator.

Baldwin will work on the children’s involvement in worship services and direct the children’s choir.

Jenny Steane, the wife of Dave Steane, will be the director of the Logos program that is set to be up and running on Sept. 24.

The program will be held once a week and will offer music, crafts, recreation, dinner, and Bible classes for children through grade 12.

The new Sunday morning schedule begins at 8:30 a.m. with a traditional worship service, followed by Christian education for all ages at 9:45 a.m. The contemporary worship service will be at 11 a.m.

The church is at 3223 N. Marguerite Road. For more information on the new programs, call 924-2350.

Bible class begins Wednesday

Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines, is starting a class on how to understand the Bible.

“Interpretation - A Guide to Understanding the Bible Today,” will be offered each Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., beginning this week. A book is required for the class and costs $12. Child care will be provided.

To register for the class or for more information, call the church office at 924-9750.

The Bible class will not be held on Oct. 1. Instead, the church will be presenting a special speaker, Spokane native Joyce Claypool. Claypool, who has AIDS, will speak on “Christian Compassion and AIDS.” Claypool’s daughter, Kara, who died of AIDS in 1995, played a large role in increasing local understanding about the disease.

Claypool will speak at 6:30 p.m. The presentation is free and child care will be available.

‘The Life of Jesus in Concert’

Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye, will host Christian performer Mike Kessler in concert during the 8:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday. The concert, titled “The Life of Jesus in Concert,” chronicles the life of Jesus in song and narration.

Christian vocalist to perform

The Valley Assembly of God Church, 15618 E. Broadway, will present Christian country music singer Lisa Daggs in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday. The concert is free.

Nashville-based Daggs was voted female vocalist of the year last year by the Christian Music Association.
