Skim Milk Disappearing From Dairy Case

Associated Press

Most shoppers won’t find skim milk in the grocery store next year. No 2 percent, either. A federal drive for more nutritional information on food labels is finally reaching the dairy case.

“There no longer will be skim milk. That will be fat-free milk. Low fat will be the old 1 percent. Two percent is reduced fat. Whole milk’s the only one that stays the same,” said Brad Legreid, executive director of the Wisconsin Dairy Products Association.

Bottlers have until Jan. 1 to change their labels, but some got started this summer. The reaction has been mixed.

Foremost Farms began using its redesigned labels on its Golden Guernsey milk brand in July, spokesman Joe Weis said.

“There’s been some initial resistance. Confusion is a better word,” Weis said.
