Another Hawkins Wins For Ferris At Highlander

The wave of Hawkinses continues unabated at Ferris High.

Isaac Hawkins has taken his championship form to Stanford University this autumn after two State AAA titles, but he left behind something valuable: advice for his sister.

“I talked to him a lot about his junior and senior years,” senior Emily Hawkins said after winning the varsity girls race Saturday at Shadle Park’s Highlander Invitational.

“He’s been a good role model for me,” she added. “I miss him; I’m trying to carry on for him.”

Hawkins quickly took the lead on the winding, 2.5-mile course. She maintained a significant edge throughout and finished in 15 minutes, 27 seconds. Mead’s Annie McCabe (15:34) and Kelley Mattingly (15:37) finished 3-4.

Hawkins’ brother Ben finished 11th in the freshman race. Eighth-grade sister Elizabeth also runs.

The seven ranked girls 4A teams in attendance bowed down to threetime State AA champion East Valley, which is ranked second in the 3A. EV scored 99, eight less than second-ranked Eisenhower, led by freshman twins Melanie (eighth in 15:50) and Melissa (13th in 15:55) Frostad.

Lewis and Clark, ranked No. 1 among 4As, finished sixth. LC’s top returner, Jamie Borgan, dropped back on the advice of coach Wes Marburger because of a sore knee.

University swept all four boys races. Seth Mott rallied from third place to win the senior boys race and guide the second-ranked Titans to a 35-61 edge over Gonzaga Prep.

G-Prep’s Jim Rucker, who had won three consecutive Highlanders, played cat-and-mouse with Ferris’ Dan Schruth for most of the race. Mott made his move with one-half mile to go, then rallied again when briefly passed by Schruth.

Mott (12:52) topped Schruth by 7 seconds. Rucker (13:04) outleaned Prep’s Rick White for third.

“I was only expecting (Rucker) to be ahead of me,” said Mott, second to Rucker at last year’s Highlander. “Schruth came out of nowhere.”

Bryan Marchand (17:27) and Sarah Harris (21:27) of host WilburCreston won races at the 3-mile Wildcat Invitational at Wilbur.

W-C’s girls and Reardan’s boys won team titles.

Joey Neuman’s ninth-place finish, 15:43 for 3 miles, led eighth-ranked Lewis and Clark to second place at the Salt Creek Invitational in Port Angeles, Wash.
