Last-Ditch Goal Does In Chiefs
Darrell Hay’s empty-net goal with 21 seconds remaining lifted the Tri-City Americans past the Spokane Chiefs 5-4 Saturday at the WHL exhibition Tri-City Tournament.
The Americans (2-4) were playing short-handed with Ken McKay in the penalty box when Hay scored the winner from his own zone off a faceoff.
The Chiefs took a 4-3 led at 11:02 in the third period when Marian Cisar deflected a Kyle Rossiter shot from the left point. Spokane’s Ben Johnson scored two goals, the first at 18:21 in second period. His second came at 8:04 in the final period and tied the game at 3.
Bill Bellmore scored Spokane’s first goal that cut Tri-City’s first-period lead to 2-1.
Spokane, 2-4 in the preseason, plays Seattle in today’s consolation final at 11 a.m. Portland defeated Seattle 5-2 Saturday night. , DataTimes
