Chiefs Send John Cirjak To Regina In Completion Of Trade For Johnson
John Cirjak, one of the most explosive threats in clutch time in Spokane Chiefs history, was sent to the Regina Pats Monday to complete the deal that brought Perry Johnson to Spokane.
Johnson, 20, a versatile defensman, fills a critical need for the Chiefs, who may have to start the season with veteran defenseman Joel Boschman on the injured list.
Boschman suffered a broken thumb in a Sept. 14 exhibition with Portland.
Cirjak came to Spokane in 1993 from Burnaby, British Columbia. He was second on the club last year in scoring with 31 goals and 53 assists. Known for creating opportunity with a game on the line, Cirjak scored 46 of his 84 points on the power play.
“He was surprised and disappointed,” Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz said. “He expected to be here. But it’s a good opportunity for John.
He’s been here a long time. This gives him a fresh start with a coach he knows.”
Former Chiefs assistant Parry Shockey coaches the Pats.
“We had a need to shore up our defense,” Speltz said. “Johnson can play in all situations.”
